Bug Description

After updating my karmic system to lucid, GLX stopped working.

I am using the nvidia driver. The reason for the problem is that X loads the GLX module from xserver-xorg-core, and the nvidia driver explicitly asks for an Nvidia GLX-driver.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf.

I found a straightforward workaround by replacing the Xserver GLX library with the Nvidia one:

cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
sudo libglx.so libglx.so.original
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so libglx.so

Hi esperanto3000,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy,

I don't think the issue is dependant on the kernel version. It is a packaging/configuration problem between xserver-xorg-core and nvidia-current, which both bring in a libglx.so, but only the nvidia one works.

So I removed the needs-upstream-testing tag without further testing. Sorry for bringing the tag in at the first place, I was using ubuntu-bug tool and it asked "Did this problem occur at an earlier kernel", which it obviously didn't.

If you still think it is helpful to test the latest upstream kernel, I can do so.

Sorry for being a bit helpless, I am an experienced linux user but it is my first ever bug report.

Thanks for your help,

Marco

Looks like I've got the same issue.
Just upgraded from karmic to lucid and compositing has stopped working.
If i run up fusion-icon i just get a black screen.
I followed your advise above and the xorg log seems to show the glx module being loaded, but still no compositing

I've used grep to filter lines with nvidia from my xorg log in the attached txt file, hopefully that'll help

some more interesting stuff:
a@b:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

a@b:~$ glxgears
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Hi bionicdude,

the lines in the X.org.0.log which are decisive for my bug are these:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
(EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

Did you have these lines in your log BEFORE you applied my fix? If yes, then it looks like you got one step further and have now encountered another, separate issue.

glxinfo and glxgears work fine for me after the fix.

apologies, no. I assumed it was the same issue and applied your fix. having "undone" the fix, I have the same Xorg log entries.
it does seem that i have a separate issue..

I had this issue, and found a workaround that doesn't involve overwriting system files.

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf find 'Section "Files"'. On the next line, add 'ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/"'. It should look something like the following:

Section "Files"
        ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/"
        ModulePath ...
        ...
EndSection

Adam,

I can confirm that your workaround works for me, too. And I agree it is the better solution.

After installing the latest updates, my workaround had been removed by packet installlations and I had the same issue as before. So I added the line to my xorg.conf like you described and it works perfectly (also X.0.log tells me that the right module is loaded).

Yes, the issue persists with maverick.

I just checked this:
If I take out

    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/"

from the Section "Files" in xorg.conf, I don't have GLX. If I put it in again, everything works fine.
