Bug Description

Following an update-manager upgrade of Lucid 10.4 from kernel 2.6.32-20.30 to 2.6.32-21.32, a Dell Latitude D505 laptop fails to continue after the Plymouth splash screen. The screen remains black and the system does not respond to ctrl_alt_fx nor to alt_sysreq commands. A physical power cycle is required to recover.

This is repeatable and confirmed on a second D505 laptop.

The previous kernel 2.6.32-20.30 continues to function normally.

To confirm, recovery mode does boot into the CLI and the failure occurs, as above, when gdm is launched.

Hi 4listair,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for the reply. FYI, both test laptops are at work but I am on holiday this week. I will provide an update on Tuesday 4 May, when I am back in the office. :)

Cheers

I would like to confirm this issue. I completed the upgrade freom 9.10 to 10.4 this morning and had exactly the same issue. Also booting from livecd, screen blanks and I never get to the install option screen.

model is Dell D505 with 1GB Ram and 60Gb HDD

I did the upstream testing with mainline kernels 2.6.32-02063211-generic, 2.6.32-0206321203-generic and 2.6.32-02063212-generic, and wasn't able to reproduce the bug.

I can also confirm that the mainline build of 2.6.32-0206321203-generic from /~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.12.3-lucid boots cleanly on a D505, with no problems launching gdm.

Hi,
I have similar problem with my Fujitsu Siemens LIFEBOOK S6120.
After the upgrade I could not start with (default) kernel version 2.6.32-21-generic, but with 2.6.31-21-generic it is working.

The same problem is happening here after upgrading to Lucid. Computer is a ThinkPad R50e.
2.6.32-21 and 2.6.32-22 (today's update) won't boot, neither generic, nor 386.

After splash, just when gdm should start up, screen turns black and there seems to be no activity whatsoever, no key combinations working either.

I installed today's build of the mainline kernel (2.6.34-999.201005051005) and it boots fine, also the previous 2.6.31 kernels do.

I noticed that when booting a kernel that works, the screen resolution is set to the maximum before the splashscreen is displayed whereas with the 2.6.32 kernels it remains unchanged.

The Dell 505 laptop's Graphical Processor Unit (GPU) is an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics controller.

It seems that the latest Linux kernel versions don't yet work with Intel 845, i855 and other 8xx chips. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

Some workarounds are given there if someone wishes to try them.

May the force be with you!

It appears (to me at least) that the D505 fails to start perhaps because of
Bug 554835 [855GM] GPU hang when an application tries to use XVideo
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/554835

and I notice that Comment 20 for that bug advises that a kernel fix may be achieved if we have patience... https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/554835/comments/20

A solution to this issue is posted on Ubuntu forums.

See post titled "Stuck with black screen on booting after 10.04 upgrade" See comments #7, 8,9 and 10 especially. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1467235

The solution people found is to boot into the older kernel, and then install a kernel that's even newer than the one that ships with the Lucid 10.04 iso. Seems everything works then.

Marcel Lus (marcel13) wrote :

Colm, that solution suggests installing an mainline (upstream) kernel. We've established they boot (see comments #3, #7, #8, #10) but it's not a perfect solution because those kernels aren't modified for specific Ubuntu releases (see Limitations on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds). Looks like we'll have to hope for the 2.6.34 kernels to be submitted to the repositories for a clean solution.

Same here, Lifebook S7010 with Intel 8285x (82852 or 82855, at least that's what the Windows driver supplied by Fujitsu-Siemens reports). Looks like this is the same issue as in #576294, we might consider closing one with reference to the other, in which we continue our work.

Upgraded to 10.10 Maverick today, and the issue is gone. Screen output is fine, I am also getting a mouse pointer (i.e. #631494 is also solved).

Backporting the graphics driver from Maverick would probably solve the issue also on Lucid.

4listair, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great.

Hi Christopher,

I had no further issues with this release after applying the mainline kernel, as per my #8 update: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/568939/comments/8

Since then, I have my D505 laptops running 11.4 and 11.10 with no similar issues.

I am happy to have the case closed, if it is no longer affecting anyone else.

Cheers
Alistair
