When I start a game, the audio freaks out, and the volume changes by itself

Bug Description

Every time I start a new game (only 3D games like Flightgear), the audio changes by itself. Also as I continue to play, it gets even more extreme, and it goes to the maximum. When I run other application it works fine, like Rythmbox, flash videos like Youtube, etc. I don't know why this happens. I have an HP dv4 2170us laptop.

See if updated libopenal1 helps. Here's the shared library .deb: https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/mediahacks/+files/libopenal1_1.12.854-1~lucid_amd64.deb

Hi Zack,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 566181

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Bleh, sorry, I haven't been on linux for a while. I have Linux Mint now, but yes this is still an annoying problem for when I try to play a game. But also when I do play a graphics intense game, it crashes and I have to restart my computer, I think that has to do with my video card driver, it's an Intel GMA HD (the latest Intel card I think).

Thanks for the help though. I'm kind of a n00b at this, but I have been learning more about linux and stuff. I'm trying to figure this kind of stuff out.

Camila Azevedo Moura (camilaraw) wrote :

I have the same problem on my HP and this is someway related to the module lis3lv02d, which controls the internal accelerometer inside the computer. The module provides a joystick interface (/dev/input/jsX) to the accelerometer which is activated when you open a game with joystick support, once the module enters in action the volume control gets totally crazy (continuous random up and down). The volume stops to do that when you close the game/software.

I don't know why the volume gets out of control, just suspect that is something related to volume-slider and multimedia keys from keyboards Including the mute button and the wireless button), that seems to be interacting with lis3lv02d.

These seems to happen with almost every HP notebook model from recent years.

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11.1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
