Bug Description

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04

$ uname -a: Linux mitch-lucid 2.6.32-20-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 9 20:35:55 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

This problem was first noticed in -19 kernel revision. In -19 kernel this laptop failed to boot on approx. 1 out of 20 boots. After updating to the -20 kernel today this laptop fails to boot in approx. 9 out of 10 attempts.
The laptop hangs at "new USB bus registered, assigned new bus number r3".

I noticed that there are multiple bug reports for this issue (e.g. bug #528688). I have filed this separate bug as my laptop hardware appears to be different.

I have also attached the output of: $ sudo lshw>hardware.txt

I am still experiencing this issue with today's kernel updates applied.

$ uname -a

I have attached a photo showing where it hangs in the boot process

Your kernel oops seems very similar to bug 528688, as you mentioned. Can you test the patched kernel provided in that bug report to see if that solves your issue? Thanks in advance.

I have done a fresh install now that Lucid is final. This problem still persists on all 3 of this model laptop that I have physical access to. See "mainline-kernel.JPG" for a photo showing where the laptop stops in the boot process with today's "current" mainline kernel.

Added link to upstream report.

It appears that this issue is also related to bug #410984 & upstream https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14244. These 2 bug reports were filed against Karmic x64. These same symptoms now affect Lucid i386.

Hi Mitch,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 561190

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy. Unfortunately, this is still an issue. I've tested against the mainline kernel & attached logs. This issue has also been reported upstream. Is there anything else needed for the Ubuntu side of things?

Upstream is working on the bug in the linked upstream bug & also a dupe linked to the main upstream bug.

Mitch,

Hello Jeremy,

I have a HP Pavilion HDX9200. It is said in the comments of this bug that it is similar to bug #528688. That's why I tested your kernel. Kernel 2.6.32-19-generic #29~lp528688 actually solved my problem: I'm able to boot with it. But I can't boot with 2.6.32-23.37 (lucid-proposed) which was supposed to implement the fix of 528688.

I also tried some new kernels proposed on kernel-ppa/mainline. I tried 2.6.34-020634-generic and 2.6.35-020635rc1. Still have boot problems with those kernels. The only kernel that solves my problem is the one proposed by Chase (2.6.32-19-generic #29~lp528688).

Mitch Towner, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11.1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
