Using latest version of Lucid, if I plug in my Belkin USB adaptor.

Hi leighman,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I have tested with upstream kernel:

Problem does not resolve itself.

In case this is still an issue:
can you install the linux-firmware-nonfree package and confirm that it solves the problem?

Thanks. This initally was a licensing issue, Ubuntu had to split the firmware into a seperate package that's not being installed by default.
I believe there's some functionality in update-notifier that's supposed to notify the user when a device requires non-free firmware (and offer to manually install it). But that didn't happen in my case (with a similar device that requires the same firmware, on a Natty system).

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → linux-firmware-nonfree (Ubuntu)
summary: - Belkin USB adaptor is recognised under lsusb but not in iwconfig
