Bug Description

I've been running 10.04 since Alpha 2. I have a HP Compaq 8510p laptop with a Radeon HD 2600 GFX card. I've connected an extra screen (HP 19" - max resolution 1280x1024x60hz).
Now, the dualscreen setup has been working flawlessly, until one of the fixes upgraded the kernel. Anything after 2.6.32-10-generic has been causing HSYNC problems on the extra screen. It looks like every other horizontally line is at least 1 pixel off horizontally, and this pattern scrolls downward, making the dual screen impossible to use.
When I boot with grub, kernels <= 2.6.32-10-generic works perfect. Anything above causes this behaviour. Not only in X but also using the console (which per default seems to run some VESA graphics resolution), which leads me to believe there is something awry with the radeon kernel module or similar.
I've checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg, but there is no difference between the boot entries.

I hope the source of this can be found & fixed as I cannot go above any kernel revision >2.6.32-10-generic until it's fixed.

Mainline kernel 2.6.34-999-generic #201004211003 works as normal.

Git bisect revealed [bd53bbe184ca00326a3c21834f41cca7a7bdb6d4] UBUNTU: update DRM to mainline v2.6.33
 as the first failing commit.

No worries; I do appreciate your hard work to solve this, even if it takes some time. There is, after all, a workaround (booting older kernels), but it would be beneficial if it's resolved going forward.

Thank you very much for your hard and dedicated work Andreas. I'm more than happy that the fault has been pinned down. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, be sure of that!
But what is the next step? I'd guess that the next officlal Ubuntu kernel update should contain the update, or..?

Unfortunately the update that causes the bug is quite a big thing for the lucid kernel (pulling the 2.6.33 DRM into the 2.6.32 kernel) so I fear it won't can't be fixed. What you can do is to test the current Maveric kernel, but this early in the release cycle the kernel will change a lot over the next months. I've assigned the bug to Andy Whitcroft, he is the one that committed the change that causes your problems. Hopefully he'll have time to look at it soon. I'm only a bug triager, and my job is to get the bug into a triaged state, before the devs spend time on it.

Your dedication and patience while figuring out this bug proves you may become a good triager. If you feel like it and have time for it, please consider joining the effort. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/

@Andreas -- thanks for that. Yes we are not going to be able to back out the .33 update as that is there to fix a great many other bugs. You have confirmed that the bug is fixed in v2.6.34 and not in v2.6.33 so you might consider a bisect across mainline there. There are some pre-built kernels for the -rc's for v2.6.34 which would help to narrow it down. These are found in the Mainline kernel repository:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds

We should first confirm that the v2.6.33 kernel does not work, and that the v2.6.34 kernel does work. If that is true then try the middle -rc (approximatly v2.6.34-rc4) and see how that fairs and then try the ones in between as you have in your bisect.

Thanks Andy. Would you like me to try the -rcX-lucid kernels sequentially and see what works and what doesn't? Or is there a different approach we should try?
I guess the goal is to find a solution that will work for Lucid, as it's the distro which has the problem, and also the distribution which is an LTS and might be affected by this bug for some years to come?

Allan Jensen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11.1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
