Bug Description

Binary package hint: libsane

Filed on behalf of kiwigander/'Andrew Packer' [amp@219-89-130-60.jetstart.xtra.co.nz, #ubuntu-bugs].

< kiwigander> Epson Perfection 2450 Photo. Worked OK in Breezy, in Hoary, in Warty, in RedHat 7.3 and still works if I reboot into Knoppix 3.4 Live. In Dapper, it's recognised as a USB device, and all the sane command line commands seem OK, but Xsane and iscan both fail to send commands to scanner - it just sits there.

< kiwigander> xsane starts, but when I click on "scan", it greys out for 30 seconds or so, then the window "Error: Could not send command to scanner" comes up.

< kiwigander> pascal80: I've just run scanimage and get scanimage: sane_start: Error during device I/O

< kiwigander> xsane behaves identically whether I start it from a Gnome menu or from a terminal. Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/o.

< kiwigander> xsane uses the stock epson backend (with all lines commented out except "usb") and iscan uses the epkowa backend (with all lines commented out except "usb").

I have now fitted a computer (AMD-64 running Dapper) with an IEEE-1394 Firewire port, connected the scanner via that interface (it shows up at /dev/sg0) and, after tweaking permissions, xsane works it flawlessly. Another Epson Perfection 2450 Photo user (running various versions of Fedora Core) reports essentially identical behaviour. Therefore, is the problem with the more recent version(s) of libusb, rather than with libsane?

I can confirm this. I'm using feisty. Will try via Firewire later.

I've found a workaround. Scanning works after unloading ehci_hcd.

I have this problem still in Ubuntu 7.10, but can confirm that unloading ehci_hcd solves the situation.

I'm having the same problem but my scanner is an HP LaserJet 3330 MFP. Had the problem on both Feisty and Gutsy.

I have the same problem on 64-bit Gutsy with my HP Office Jet 6310. Every time I turn off/on the unit or reboot the computer, then try to start xsane, this error results. Usually, a few removals and reinstalls of the unit have been needed before the situation resolves.

I can confirm this bug with hardy. Unloading ehci_hcd or connecting via Firewire works.

Regarding your HP-problems: Are you sure you suffer from the same bug? I suggest opening a new bug with your problem which can be marked as duplicate if it is really the same bug. Otherwise your problems are very unlikely to be seen.

(Sorry for the mess, there is some bug in Malone regarding the detection of the remote bug url)

Scanner Canon Pixma MP470 worked in Jaunty flawlessly with xsane.

However, Debian standard Lenny 2.6.26-2-686, sane -1.19, excerpt from log:
Aug 22 01:51:54 novel kernel: [ 512.663425] ehci_hcd 0000:00:04.1: HC died; cleaning up

Only "rmmod ehci_hcd" at runtime helps to access scanner in Lenny.

Still same problem in Karmic, no ehci module is used, so I can't unload it. Worked perfetly prior 9.10

I can confirm that this bug also exists in 11.10 and 12.04 beta. I've tried xsane, gscan2pdf, and simple scan, and all fail with the same error.

Daniel T Chen / Andrew Packer, is this still an issue for you? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 55272
