Bug Description

Binary package hint: initscripts

I was able to shutdown properly on Karmic, but I'm not anymore able to do this in Lucid. I got plymouth shutdown splash, but no power off, I have to force it to shutdown pressing the power button. Filling it under initscripts, but may be linux. Unkillable shutdown doesn't report any problem after a restart.

Almost certainly a kernel/ACPI/etc. issue - could you try booting without "splash" and let the devs know the last line printed on the screen

Here is a screenshot. I can reboot it with a ctrl+alt+suppr, and before rebooting it displays briefly a message about alsa-mixer-save.

I have the same problem. I can't shut down. This first happened after upgrading from Karmic. I thought it might be a problem with the upgrade process, so I did a clean reinstall. The problem reappears. Not sure what info on my computer you might want, or what command to type to get the info you need. The model is a MSI VR220 portable. Cheers

The problem seems to be solved (workaround) disabling the splash.

I´ve commented this line in the /etc/default/grub file:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and after run update-grub2

Upgraded from Karmic (no problems) to Lucid (problem as above)

Have not tried altering the grub, but disabling the ethernet and then shutting down works.

except.....
the nvidia settings are not remembered, so I have to reset System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects every time on startup, otherwise Thunderbird locks itself to the top left of the screen, and I get that stupid black cross for a cursor.

I'm also effected by this bug, or at least by a similar bug since upgrading to Kubuntu Lucid.

When I shutdown my Maxdata Pro 8100X using the menu or from the logon screen, the computer sometimes shuts down, sometimes it doesn't. Ctrl+Alt+Del has always allowed me to reboot, and "sudo halt" in a terminal always resulted in a successful shutdown.

There is no grub file in /etc/default.
My computer hasn't shut down in some weeks, so my electricity bil is rocketting.
The nvidia settings are now resolved with another bug report.
This seems to me to be a pretty big bug, but nothing concrete is being done.
What's going on?

I suppose there is no grub file in /etc/default because after an upgrade you still use the old grub.
I have the same shutdown problem. I changed the boot commandline from "quiet splash" to "quiet acpi=force" and this helps 8 out of 10 times. But still, sometimes the acpi of my system (AMD64, 1 year old) is not recognized.
I think this is a serious problem.

I am also having the problem of system hanging at splash screen at shutdown.
But just an addition that I am having this problem since I installed Jaunty
And my current installation (Lucid) is not just an up-gradation of previous versions but a fresh installation.

Nicolas DERIVE, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
