Bug Description

Whether I inset a Data CD, a Music CD, or a Movie DVD or Data DVD, the entire system freezes and I have to turn off my computer in order to reboot. This happens with Ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, and 10.04. I have a quad-core intel with 3 gigs RAM and 1TB HDD pationed correctly. This does NOT happen with 8.04 or 8.10. My DVD is a HL-DT-ST-DVD-RAM GH22LP20 DL Burner.

It sure would be nice if this bug could be fixed after 2 years!

Thank you,

Bill

Other information:

With an old Samsung CD burner, there are no problems. This only happens with LG Lightscribe DL DVD drives, old and new. It happens with Fedora 12 and the recent Mint as well. It is definitely in the kernel starting with 9.04.

Thank you,

Bill

Tested yesterday's release of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop and the system still freezes, even in live CD mode.
As soon as I inserted a "store bought" music CD, the entire system froze requiring reboot by shutting off computer. :-(

Hi Bill,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 543883

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Downloaded the latest upstream kernel available:
linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004291005_i386.deb

Tested after rebooting with the new kernel by inserting store bought music CD (Wav files)
into LG DVD/CD player and the system recognized it was a music CD and asked me if it should open Rythymbox. I clicked open and the system stopped and then froze solid. I had to do a hard reboot.

Next I tried a Data CD with various software programs on it. The system mounted the CD/DVD drive and I opened Nautilus and viewed the programs on the CD for about 20 seconds, then the whole system froze. I had to do a hard reboot.

I am typing this from Firefox using the new kernel.

PS The kernel boots at an amazing speed. I was in awe!

I hope to be able to use Ubuntu 10 once this problem is solved.
For now, I go back to 8.04 which works flawlessly.

Thank you.

Bill

Not a particularly experienced user - will provide information requested, but I don't know what to include. Should I run the same apport command?

Well, I tried the new and shiny 10.10 beta. Still will not play with my Optical CD/DVD drive.
Frozen like ice. I sure would like to be able to leave this Ubuntu 8.10 and move up a couple years with the rest of you.
But Fedora, Mint, Puppy, PCLOS, and Mandriva, any distro using the new kernel also freezes.

Until my computer breaks and I get a new one, I'm stuck with kernel Linux 2.6.27.18.

Please work on this someday.

Good News! With the release of Kernel 2.6.32.25 we're half way there!
Finally, I can access CD's or DVD's with data and files on them and also with MP3's on them.
I played with it for hours and no freeze.
HOWEVER, with a store bought Music CD or a store bought Movie DVD the system Freezes completely within 2 minutes.

Almost There.

With Ubuntu 8.10 using VirtualBox with CD passthrough Ubuntu 10.10 works. But installed on my HD Ubuntu 10.10 freezes. Bummer. :-(

Hello again,

I'm up to Linux kernel 2-6-35-25 running Ubuntu 10.10 and am finally able to read and write data to CD's & DVD's. I can play music CD's too. The only thing still NOT WORKING is I cannot play a Movie DVD without the system freezing. We are almost there, this bug is almost gone. Please keep working.
