Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Firstly, apologies but Apport on Lucid 10.04 Alpha3 won't let me report a bug for network-manager as tells me that "The problem cannot be reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package". I've tried every way to report this bug "properly" but to no avail.

What happens:
On boot, network-manager 0.8 fails to automatically start my network connection using my Huawei E172 3G USB modem stick, leaving me with no Internet connection. I have to physically unplug the stick and plug it in again, and then network-manager starts the connection.
This was working perfectly through Alpha 1 and Alpha2, up to network-manager/nm-applet v0.799. It only broke a couple of days ago when network-manager/nm-applet was upgraded to v0.8 - so I consider this to be a regression.

is this reproducible:
Yes, every time.

What should happen:
Network connection using Huawei E172 USB modem should auto-start on boot.

Please can you let me know what config and log files you need, so I can attach them to this bug report. Many thanks.

Not sure which bug to report against: this one or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/509547

Sadly, I don't have a date for when this stopped working, nor do I know how to provide you with the correct information to fix it: provide me with questions and instructions and I will upload whatever logs are needed. In the meantime:

My 3G usb dongle does not get picked up by my machine running Lucid. It seems to get picked up if I reboot only if I leave it inserted. I have tested the dongle itself on another machine (also running Lucid) and that was fine. That machine was a Dell. Mine is a Lenovo Ideapad U350.

I have asked and gotten all the information that we have together at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1440262
This is a "Show Stopper" bug, you have little time to fix it, it has just 'bubbled' along, but has not gone away.

Phill.

Unfortunately I can't provide any more help with this bug, as I have cancelled my 3G mobile broadband contract. Hopefully someone else can help.

Also I had this device working with the development kernel, but when I put the latest kernel on, it failed to work.

I have two fresh lucid installs

One recognizes the GSM modem AND the CD rom and micro-sd card slot.

One doesn't recognize the GSM modem.

I'm trying to work out what the difference is. Neither had usb_modeswitch installed

My fix was these steps, I don't know which made the difference but I tried it on 2 laptops that were failing to work:

sudo modprobe usbserial
insert modem
sudo usb_modeswitch -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/*1003
reboot with the usb modem installed

Now it works just fine on all of my lucid laptops

Correction: It works for me if I plug in the 3G modem before booting.
The usb_modeswitch does nothing.

Hiyas, I'm real disappointed that no one has as even taken the time to ask me what extra details they need to progress this bug, it is still here in 10.10. As a member of the bug squad I do now know why I get complaints directly to me about bugs being completely ignored.

Phil, it was already requested twice to attach the information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingNetworkManager. There is really nothing that a developer can do about this bug without debugging information. Developers don't have all the hardware in the world, and it works fine for other devices.
