Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Setting up initramfs-tools (0.92bubuntu64) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-12-generic

update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-12-generic
dpkg: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

This error is a side effect of bug 519855

== WORKAROUND ==
The workaround is to open a terminal and run the following command:
$ cd /lib/udev
$ sudo ln -s firmware firmware.sh
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

Or wait a few hours until the update is available on your mirror.
** Don't forget to remove the symlink before upgrading to the newest release of the faulty package.
Rebooting with after this error may or may not work depending on your hardware. **

This is the subject of a thread on the Ubuntuforums sub forum for testing 10.04. It is a bugger but the work around works.

Hi all.
I solved my problem with the update manager by hitting the following bash-lines:

~$ cd /
/$ sudo wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/39011493/udev-firmware.patch
/$ sudo patch -Np0 < udev-firmware.patch
sudo rm udev-firmware.patch

These line-commands are suggested in the topic of the community forum linked above.

Thank for all your helpfulness guys.

So is there really a fix released or is the work around what is making the fix be released?

Okay, just ran the workaround in a terminal and now update-manager works again... I see that there are lots of updates and one of them is for update-manager so yeah, there is a fix released...

For those of us less familiar with commands, please clarify what is meant by "Don't forget to remove the symlink before upgrading to the newest release of the faulty package."
I presume "sudo ln -s firmware firmware.sh" created the link, but I need to find out how to remove it.

Thanks,

Rob Candee

After some quick digging, I believe the command to remove the link is "sudo rm firmware.sh". It would be helpful if the instructions above included that.

The line "Or wait a few hours until the update is available on your mirror." may be misleading. I waited several days without any change. Only following the other instructions above (including removing the link) helped.

Thanks,

Rob Candee
