Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

This usually happens when the system is idle for some time. I haven't yet checked to see if disabling the screen saver (which is OpenGL) helps, although I plan to try that.

I want to mention that the system, other than the video, does stay responsive when this situation occurs. I see the render error and GPU hung error in my logs and the console becomes useless because there is no longer any video after this happens, but the system itself keeps running. I generated this bug report by SSHing into the system to report the bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug, Brian. Take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for more information about this kind of bug and especially how to get a batchbuffer dump. Other things that would be useful is disabling any OpenGL stuff and also try some newer and older mainline kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ (see also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) to see if any of them stop the freezes.
