Bug Description

The current pvrusb2 driver doesn't work with recent HVR-190x firmware.

-> The kernel error is:

pvrusb2: wrong fx2 firmware size

-> Here's the thread discussing the problem in 9.10

http://www.isely.net/pipermail/pvrusb2/2009-November/002661.html

-> This is the text describing the update:

A new pvrusb2 driver snapshot is available. The one change is:

(+) Further fix to support use of larger FX2 16KB firmware. Missed
one spot in the firmware loader and forgot to include HVR-1900
alongside HVR-1950 in the set of devices which could load the
     larger firmware.

Thanks to Gary Francis for keeping me honest - including the extra
push to make me actually pay attention to his patch which is the
change described above.

And sorry for missing this before.

This snapshot also includes the snazzy new fwextract.pl along with
updated documentation.

As usual, the pvrusb2 web site can be found at:

The summary from the linked email thread is that there are two ways to solve this for 10.04:

1. package and distribute an older version (8KB rather than 16 KB) of the firmware
2. backport a .33 kernel patch to the Ubuntu .32 kernel

summary: - please backport pvrusb2 fix for FX2 16KB firmware to kinky koala
+ please backport pvrusb2 fix for FX2 16KB firmware

I'm sure users would appreciate back porting this as far as possible (10.04 at least, but 9.10 certainly wouldn't be objected to :-)

I searched pretty extensively and can't find the meaning of 'kernel-series-unknown'.

Sorry if this wasn't clear... this was a problem introduce in the 2.26.31 kernel and the fix is landing on the upstream 2.26.33 kernel. Request is for to be fixed in 2.6.32, and if not too disruptive, 2.26.31 as well.

@Marc, @cagney -- do we have a pointer to the fix which will land in 2.6.33 ? If you could point us at it it would speed up the process of deciding if its something we can carry. Thanks.

@cagney -- pulled those fixes back to the lucid kernel for testing. Could you test the kernels at the URL below and report back here. Thanks!

Howdy Andrew Cagney (and/or anyone else with an interest in this): just wanting to call your attention to the request by a kernel developer worked on this ticket. Is there any way that you could test this - at a minimum, perhaps by temporarily installing his 10.04 kernel and then reverting back?

(finally) I've successfully tested this kernel with the 8k and 16k firmware versions.

Fine print ...

I used an x86 laptop installed with kinky koala, to verify functionality I used mplayer tuning into both analog and digital canadian broadcast channels. I've not tried this under mythtv, or for any length of time.

Marking incomplete as this release isn't supported anymore. Can anyone confirm that this issue is still present on a supported Mythbuntu/MythTV release?

cagney, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
