Bug Description

Binary package hint: hal

Touchpad was working with ubuntu 9.04 but stopped working when I installed 9.10

=== Diagnosis ===
Run 'uname -a' and determine if the kernel version matches with the current OS (2.6.31 for Karmic). If the kernel version is incorrect, then the problem is likely caused by driver incompatibilities.

=== Fix ===
Modifying the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include the correct kernel entry to boot into is necessary. Usually, 'sudo update-grub' should be sufficient. Then reboot the computer.

This is probably not a duplicate of bug 479839 because the make/models of the laptops in question are completely different. While the symptoms may be similar, the fix for both of these computers may be slightly different.

Jonas, thank you for reporting this bug. To help gather more information, could you run the following commands in the terminal:

cat /proc/version_signature > ~/version_signature
sudo lspci -vvnn > ~/lspci_vvnn
dmesg > ~/dmesg

And then upload the files: "version_signature", "lspci_vvnn", and "dmesg" which will be in your home directory. Also, please upload your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file as well.

Jonas, I have just noticed something odd. You say that you upgraded to Karmic (9.10), but your log files say that you are using the Jaunty (9.04) kernel.

Double-check your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. If you are using Karmic (9.10), your kernel version should be 2.6.31. If you don't see that entry in your menu.lst file, make a backup of it, and then run 'sudo update-grub' to rebuild that file. Then boot into the 2.6.31 kernel and see if your touchpad works.

Updating menu.lst solved the problem (and other bugs as well). Somehow it didn't got updated when I upgraded.

As a side note, "sudo update-grub" does not overwrite menu.lst. I had to delete it and then update-grub again to make it work. I don't know if that is what update-grub is supposed to do.

Thanks

Ok, good to know that it solved your touchpad and other issues. That is curious that update-grub did not update your menu.lst file, but then again, I have not familiarized myself with the new grub system.

Jonas, there might be a duplicate bug report that would be relevant to your situation. Did you happen to manually edit the menu.lst file while you were using Jaunty?
