Bug Description

Since ubuntu has switched from ide to pata (specifically from via82cxxx to pata_via), my Sony PCG-FR285E laptop eventually freezes on hard disk i/o, after some minutes or some hours of use, independently of disk activity.

I've rebuilt the ubuntu karmic kernel enabling via82cxxx and disabling pata_via. This has solved the problem.

Under Intrepid, comment #46 of bug #213639 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/213639/comments/46) fixes the problem too.

This upstream bug report: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11426 might be the same issue (though I don't use my optical drive).

Still present in lucid beta 2. Note that pata_via is marked as EXPERIMENTAL in menuconfig and does not seem to be updated.

Why not build the ide stack just for this hardware?

Hi Ric,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
