Bug Description

I updated my ubuntu karmic on the 14th of october. After restart my CPU cooling fan does not start cooling the CPU after kernel start. Until the kernel loading does not start the cooler works. In gnomeI see that the CPU is 40 degrees warm that is totally not true. Kernel version: 2.6.31-14. With kernel 2.6.31-13 this error does not happen. Could you check what the problem could be?

Looking at the delta between the two kernels you are running we do appear to have turned on a feature which gives access to the machine check information. That seems to bring a new thermal probe mechanism online. That may account for the change in information. Have you tried stressing the machine to 1) see if that sensors value increases and 2) if that in turn triggers the fans?

Matyesz (zmatyas) wrote :

Yes, I have tried using it and what I got is the BIOS turned off the machine to prevent CPU overheating.
The sensor always showed 40 degrees what is the lowest value, so it seems the sensor is not working at all.

I edited a typo in the bug description changing 2.4.31 to 2.6.31. I also have this bug on an acer aspire 5315-2077. Same sensor error too, I installed lm-sensors and the gnome panel applet and thought I was watching it but it suddenly shut off while never changing from 45 in the applet. The fans never turned on. In the -13 kernel the comp idles at 45-50. In the applet I have 3 sensors, 1 from acpi called TZ01, and 2 from libsensors, one called temp1 and the other called Core 0. Core 0 seems to have a finer 1 degree scale while the other two change in increments of 5. I ran sensors-detect when attempting to install xsensors (but all I got was was a blank 2x2 window, but that's a separate issue). When I ran sensors-detect I accepted all the defaults except that I chose to automatically add the sensors that it said it found.

I have almost the same problem. I am on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L1310G. If the laptop is cold (below 50 C) when I start it, the fan does not start at all. If it is warm when I start it, the fan runs until the temperature is below 50 C. The fan then turns off, never to turn on again (even if the temperatures rise above 50C).

The same issue existed in every version I've tried (I started using Ubuntu with 8.04), but there was a patch on the laptop testing page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/FujitsuAmiloL1310G under "From the start). This patch made the fan run all the time which was no problem. This patch does, however, not seem to work with GRUB 2. I can at least not find a way of getting it to work.

What can I do to help you fix this bug?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5955 which required the 'acpi_osi="Linux"' text as part of the kernel boot parameters in menu.lst in 9.04 to make the fan work. I tacked this verbage onto the kernel boot parameters in 9.10 but it caused the cooling fan to remain off until the temp hit 130 F, then it would kick on to cool the unit down to 109. This cycle would repeat about every 10 minutes with the CPU idling around 3%. Your patched kernel keeps the cooling fan running constantly on a low level. Many thanks.

Hi,

As seen on various forums, and because my laptop (Acer Aspire-5315) is on a dual boot with an XP, I chose to flash my BIOS. Went from V.1.33 to V.1.45 (latest on Acer website). Problem solved.

Acer provides an .exe file in order to flash the BIOS (the one I used), and I can't find the bios file in order to use it under Linux system. BUT, I did find an ISO file for the BIOS 1.43 (not the latest but "new"enough to solve to problem apparently).

Download the ISO file from here:

Burn it, and boot on it.

I have created an ISO image ready to burn with the BIOS version 1.43. Follow the steps:

- Unpack and burn the ISO image with you favourite application.
- Reboot your Acer laptop.
- Hit F2 in the first screen to enter setup. Navigate to menu "Boot" and make sure the first device is CD drive.
- Save and exit. It will boot the FreeDOS Operating System.
- Make sure when you get the prompt that you are in the CD unit (is labeled X:).
- Change directory to X:\firm (cd firm).
- Execute if50.bat to flash the 1.43 version BIOS.

I prepared this to flash my own Acer Aspire 5315, so I though I could share. Credits go to Sean Reifschneider for explaining the process to create a FreeDOS iso image modified (http://www.tummy.com/journals/entries/jafo_20080920_234755).

Link to the iso image: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/221701/FDOS_v1_43.iso.tar.gz

I hope it helps. Of course, use at your own risk! Anybody not sure about using this iso, just read Mr. Reifschneider post and feel free to follow the steps.

For anyone using the CD ISO I prepared for ACER ASPIRE 5315, please follow these choices when booting:

1.- Choose "1) Continue to boot FreeDOS from CD-ROM".
2.- Choose "1) Install to harddisk using FreeDOS SETUP".

That will take you to the prompt on X: unit. The trick is that the file "setup.bat" is modified so it ends prematurely and doesn't install anything. If you abort the installation, it will show you the prompt in the A: unit, and you won't be able to access the bios directory.

Once you are in the X: prompt, you can change to the directory called "firm" and execute the file "if50.bat".

I hope everything is clear now, I should be more explicit in the explanation.

Just a wild guess, since I'm not very acknowledged on this ACPI
matters, but is it possible that the time it didn't work you had
previously booted without the parameters? It seems to me that the
kernel/something changes some ACPI configuration that is only restored
after a complete shutdown, and the parameter won't work if you simply
reboot.
BTW, by "not work" you mean it heats to the point of a shutdown or
"just" that it gets hotter than you expected?

I put it in the grub2 default file like this:

This isn't wrong "per se" (by itself/by definition). My cheap notebook (which has a discrete graphics card!) can stand only on passive cooling for several minutes, in quite warm environment - I live in Belém, Brazil ;-)

If you have working temperature sensors it's safe to work with temperatures below 80ºC (and even a bit higher), but of course I won't recommend waiting this much ;-)
The fan in my notebook starts (with very slow speed) around 60ºC.

No, no, I just thought that you could be using dual boot (or another ubuntu entry without the parameter, e.g. the failsafe option).

Yes, I have exactly the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5715z and the
new Ubuntu 10.04. The fan is running properly in Windows and BIOS.

/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp says 40 degrees which is not true at all.

Has anyone some suggestions?

Thanks!

Thanks in advance

I just booted Vista and executed the .exe file ;)

I'm not an expert so I don't know if this can be recommended
(if you have Windows installed), but for me it was the easiest way.

Angel, i check out in the ACER website: the BIOS is the same for both 5715Z and 5315 that are the same pc model.

So i will try to fash with your ISO file.

You wrote:
1-Unpack and burn the ISO image with you favourite application.
2- Reboot your Acer laptop.
3- Hit F2 in the first screen to enter setup. Navigate to menu "Boot" and make sure the first device is CD drive.
4- Save and exit. It will boot the FreeDOS Operating System.
5- Make sure when you get the prompt that you are in the CD unit (is labeled X:).
6- Change directory to X:\firm (cd firm).
7- Execute if50.bat to flash the 1.43 version BIOS.

Points 1, 2, 4,6 are simple.
Point3: is there in blue BIOS screen a choise where i could select the first device on CD drive?
Point5: what is the label X? did you write "X" as a variabile device that i have to fill or i need to use exactly "X"?
Point7: In DOS i hae to write "X:\firm" to enter in the right directory and then? is it just enough i write "if50.bat"? or i have to write something "Do if50.bat" (i don't use DOS since long time ago with my old 286.....)

Other questions (i put all the question)
Points 1: i have to burn the ISO file in the cd or i have to extract all the folders and then burn its ?
Point3: in the menu Boot i find:
1: IDE 0 WDC w..... (that is the current choice)
2: IDE 1 : HL-DT-ST-DVDRAMGSA-...
3: USB .....
4: NETWORK....
5:USB HDD ....
6: USB CDROM
Which one i have to choice?
Point5: what is the label X? did you write "X" as a variabile device that i have to fill or i need to use exactly "X"?
Point7: In DOS i hae to write "X:\firm" to enter in the right directory and then? is it just enough i write "if50.bat"? or i have to write something "Do if50.bat" (i don't use DOS since long time ago with my old 286.....)

Sorry, not much time to answer... let's see:

- About point 1: No need to uncompress the iso image. Just use the option burn image, or copy image to disc, or whatever is called in your favourite program.
- About point 3: Yes, in the setup screen, you should see your CD/DVD drive in the list, I can't answer which one is the right one now, I don't have my laptop at hand, but it seems to be the "IDE 1 : HL-DT-ST-DVDRAMGSA-..." device.
- About point 5: Yes, that unit is called X: , it's not a variable name :)
- About point 7: Yo change the current directory, use the command "cd", in this case, if you are in X:\ use "cd firm", it will take you to X:\firm. Then execute the bat file just typing the name of the file, no need to use another command to run it --> if50.bat

I tried many ways to solve this issue, but none of them worked.
Finally I updated my bios thanks to the work of Angel García and his FDOS modified version, which
greatly helped to update the bios.
Since then the fan of this laptop worked perfectly.

Gracias Angel.

FYI.
With Toshiba Satellite pro 4600 all Ubuntu after 8.**** do not use CPU fan with resulting overheating & shut down problems.
This came to light after laptop was used full time when the screen size problem was resolved & full screen function restored.
(used ver 6.01 /etc/X11/xorg.conf)

Hi, people. I see you are all smart and know about Ubuntu a lot. But from this topic I've got to .patch files only and zero info about what to do with them after downloading. I tried to find info in google about .patch files, but there no info about how exactly install them or apply - exactly for the fan problem. I'm not using Ubuntu long time, so I would appreciate if you tell me steps how to make this .patch file work.

I installed Ubuntu yesterday and sensors shows Core temp always +80 or more, and then PC shut down.
