Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

smbclient:
  Installed: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5
  Candidate: 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

smbclient :

root@tv:~# smbclient //time/share -U mythtv
Enter mythtv's password:
Domain=[hiddennet] OS=[Apple Base Station] Server=[CIFS 4.32]
smb: \> SMBecho failed. Maybe server has closed the connection

smbclient is trying to connect to an apple time capsule with the latest firmware (7.4.2) .

smbclient in Ubuntu 9.04 works correctly to the same share using the same parameters

smbclient compiled from source from samba.org on the same machine works when using the path samba-3.4.2/source3/bin/smbclient works correctly too.

Bump, I'm having this problem in 9.10 as well :( .. Will 3.4.2 be in 9.10 or should I just go and get the samba source? PPA?

3.4.2 will not be in 9.10, though the fix for this specific bug might get backported as a SRU.

I am still affected by this bug in Ubuntu lucid when trying to connect to an HP Color LaserJet. It has got a memory card used by the built-in scanner:

user@myhost:~$ smbclient //192.168.1.34/memory_card -U myuser
Enter myuser's password:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[threadx] Server=[NQ 4.32]

Got this error on maverick when I try to connect to a Time Capsule (7.4.2). The error might be on the server side though since some Windows workstation have random problems when connecting as well...

I had a look at wireshark and the Time Capsule does indeed respond with an error. The Echo Request packet (0x2b) receives a Echo Response (0x2b) with an NT status of 0xffff0002 (Unknown according to Wireshark):

0000 ff 53 4d 42 2b 02 00 ff ff 88 01 40 00 00 00 00
0010 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 23 0c 01 00 04 00
0020 00 00 00

I don't know if smbclient should handle such a response or not.

According to
  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee441884%28PROT.13%29.aspx
is 0xffff0002 STATUS_SMB_NO_SUPPORT.

As this is only an echo I guess smbclient should just ignore this error. Can somebody please reopen this bug?

Since this still affects precise, I opened bug 1032133 which also references the bugs in the Samba Bugzilla and the Debian BTS.
