I found some patch online http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/git-commits-head/2008/6/14/2122314 maybe this is good.

Hi Rajeev,
Thanks for reporting this to us and helping to make Ubuntu better. In order for us to move this to Triaged status we also need you to test the latest mainline kernel. You can find instructions to do this at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds
Thank you.

@Rajeev -- that patch was included in the mainline kernel as of v2.6.26-rc7, thus should be included in all Ubuntu releases from Intrepid.

Hello andy

I was not sure if that was included in the kernel.So interesting point is that my cd/dvd drive stopped working since intrepid.Maybe it worked for some but broke for me.

Any other suggestions? I was told by teej to try some of the mainline kernels which ill be trying tonight.Ill report back with results.

Thanks a lot.

Ok, so to clarify, this worked in Intrepid, but since then it's not? This is a definite regression, tagging as such, and yes if you could test the latest daily mainline kernel as we spoke about on IRC, it would be great.

@zaiboot - can you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect -p linux 425756

This will help us to determine if it is the same cause. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

xteejx (xteejx-deactivatedaccount) wrote :

After speaking on IRC, we may have established that the BIOS version/settings may have been causing the soft lockup/reset error. The drive is still not detected though and I am not sure if testing a mainline kernel will help in this case as it is just hardware detection.
I believe there is enough information, however, for a developer to begin looking at the problem, so I shall mark this Triaged and let them handle it from here. Thank you.

The problem is the same.
I use Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) not 9.10 ( Karmic Koala).

I have problems since: 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and also in 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) and of course in 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
I started this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1267503, and rajeev1204 post that he/she filled a bug report.
Thank you.....

I think he tried with 8.04 live cd which of courseworks .

@zaiboot, apport is used to collect info about the current system ,so i used it to collect info about my system which i installed from a live usb drive.

Install 9.04 from live usb using software unetbootin from windows, then you can install ubuntu.
Then from inside ubuntu you can type apport-collect -p linux 425756 which will add your info to this bug report automatically.

If we look at the karmic boot we see the following:

    [...]
    [ 1.000067] ata5.01: NODEV after polling detection

Looking at the trigger for this message we find that is can only be emmitted when talking to a PATA device, there seem to be three ways this can be triggered, though the second of these ought to emit a message:

    /* If diagnostic failed and this is
     * IDENTIFY, it's likely a phantom
     * device. Mark hint.
     */
or
    /* HSM violation. Let EH handle this.
     * Phantom devices also trigger this
     * condition. Mark hint.
     */
or
    /* There are oddball controllers with
     * status register stuck at 0x7f and
     * lbal/m/h at zero which makes it
     * pass all other presence detection
     * mechanisms we have. Set NODEV_HINT
     * for it. Kernel bz#7241.
     */

It might be informative to know which of these it is however. I have added some diagnostics for these various cases and built test kernels. Perhaps you could test those and report back here. There should be some APW: lines in the dmesg output, if you could attach that from the debug kernel. Kernels can be found at the URL below:

Hi

I solved this problem by changing the dvd/cd drive from slave to master by setting the jumper.You need to physically remove the drive and set the jumper to master.

A lot of thanks to andy and stefan from ubuntu-kernel irc for suggesting the workaround.

After 1 year of darkness, i can finally start renting dvd's again :))
