Bug Description

My computer just shuts off and there is nothing in the logs. The computer temp goes high (150F) for a few seconds right before but one you reboot it is back to normal(118F). There is no warning but it has happened at least 3 times in less than 12 hours. I'd be willing to help troubleshoot and test.

If the temperature goes above the critical trip point an emergency shutdown would be expected. The question is why the temperature is rising so much. We heard of some cases but it was hard to get it repeated and more information, so help is welcome. In theory the temp would need to go higher than 150F/66C, but that might be going quicker than the update. Is there something defined in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/???/trip_points?
Do you know which kernel version seemed to work ok last? Also, is it possible to check the fan speed? The Dells I got can use the i8k module and the cat /proc/i8k, not sure this works with your model. Otherwise from the sound of the fan, does it sound like it went to higher speeds before and now does not run or runs slower than before?

Oh, I forgot. Is in the cases when this happens some suspend/resume going on in between?

And while we are on it "sudo acpidump -o acpidump.txt". Sorry for the various bits, it is getting late here.

It may also be instructive to try one of the latest mainline kernel builds and report on that. v2.6.31-rc2 from the mainline builds archive might be appropriate, these can be found at the URL below:

Please report back here. Thanks!

This is very likely related to bug #370173 following that bug is worthwhile.
