Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10
linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic:
  Installé : 2.6.27-7.13
  Candidat : 2.6.27-7.13
 Table de version :
 *** 2.6.27-7.13 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The booting process hangs at 'Waiting for root file system' and drops into an initramfs shell (BusyBox) saying
'Gave up waiting for root device.'
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/38068b8e-13c5-4756-844a-a9aba2436269 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Here I type 'exit' and booting continues normally.

I attach /var/log/debug.

Hi Tobais,

I assume /dev/disk/by-uuid/38068b8e-13c5-4756-844a-a9aba2436269 does indeed exist? Care to also attach your dmesg output after you boot? Can you also describe the hw you have more? Additionally, 2.6.27-7.14 is available. I suspect it won't make a difference, but it wouldn't hurt to verify. Also, I'm curious if you add the boot option "rootdelay=<some #>" if that helps avoid being dropped into the busybox? For example rootdelay=60 will pause 60seconds before attempting to mount the root filesystem. You may need to adjust that number to be higher or lower through trial and error. Thanks.

Hi Leann,
yes the described disk does indeed exist. The laptop I am using is a HP nc 8430. I have not installed 2.6.27-7.14, yet, but as you say, I also don't think this will make a difference. Today I noticed that if I don't skip the boot menu at startup immediately when it comes up then I don't get this error if I however press 'enter' even before the boot menu comes up then I get this error. So it might have to do something with the rootdelay, which I have not tested, yet. I have no idea what number to put, but it seems that 10s is probably sufficient, because that is the time that the boot menu takes to automatically disappear, but I am speculating.

I also just noticed that my theory is not quite true. I shutdown, restarted and waited for the boot menu to pass after 10 s thinking that I will not have an error but I found myself in front of the initramfs prompt! I shutdown and then booted into my windows partition, shut down windows and started ubuntu again, waiting for 10 s and it booted normally. This seems pretty random!

As of today I cannot recreate the boot failure. Everything seems fixed. Might it have to do with the new linux image? I will test a bit more. Bug #47768 seems similar to this one.

Hi Tobias,

Glad to hear this seems to be resolved. I'll mark this "Fix Released" for now, but if this reappears feel free to reopen this by setting the status back to "New". Thanks.

Hi Leann,
this morning I used the laptop at home without a problem (copying some files to and external drive) and when I got to work I had the same problem again (droping to the BusyBox shell). I shall now reboot and see if I still have the problem and if yes then I shall boot into windows to see if then it gets back to normal.

Ok Leann,
instead of booting into windows, I tried your idea rootdelay=60, and it seems to work. I'll change the status to fixed again until I have the problem again. Thank you.
