Do you have a way to reproduce this issue, or was it a one time event?

This looks like yet another duplicate of bug #922906.

Up to now this only happened once with my current system configuration. However, I'm wondering if this has the same root cause as the other bug I hit previously:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1003096

In any case, I've run a memory test and it does not report any error.

I found that after upgrading to the new kernel my system won't boot. I get a small kernel trace with CPU #1 soft lockup in it. Booting to the previous kernel 3.2.0-24 works fine. I'm using the pae version of the kernel on a dual AMD Athlon(tm) MP 2800+
system.

I believe this to be a different bug from 922906. I've upgraded to kernel 3.2.0.36 and then to 3.2.0.37 and still had 2 ooops. There is however a difference: with the new kernels there is no single line in the syslog about the crash.
